Weekly Trends & Innovative Insights for Convenience Store Owners.

Travel No More

How has technology changed your job?

When I began working for my current employer (on my second tour of duty now) there was much more travel for in person meetings, presentations, and demos. When I travelled I had to make room for a PowerBook laptop (5.4lbs) a clamshell phone, a Palm Tungsten, a digital camera with a whopping 2mp camera, and an assortment of charging and transfer cables. Think of that bag or drawer you have at home filled with the USB cables you can’t quite justify recycling and you can imagine what the inside of my carry-on looked like.

All of our graphic design work was 2D, flat, and cartoonish compared to what can be produced today.

Now there is very little travel. I can conference call a client and have them show me what they want to discuss in real-time. A designer can manipulate a 3D rendering during a Teams meeting so client changes happen right before their eyes. I can send a link for a rendering that the client can manipulate on their iPad to see all aspects of a product or view what the product will look like in their space.

When everything is working technology is wonderful and inspiring. When there is an issue it can grind everything to a halt. I love every aspect of the leap forward technology has ushered in and wouldn’t go back. My carryon is a MacBook Pro (3.4lbs) and a smartphone with a camera that can almost compete with a DSLR. I’m perfectly fine with technology.
