Finding Awe (and Exercise) Before the World Wakes Up

Hey everyone,

The WordPress Daily Prompt landed in my inbox today with a question that really got me thinking: “What’s the most fun way to exercise?” Fun and exercise—two words that don’t always feel like they belong in the same sentence, right? For a lot of us, working out can feel like just another box to check off. But for me, the answer was crystal clear: hiking.

Not just any hiking, though. My favorite way to move my body and feed my soul involves hiking boots, my trusty smartphone (did it really happen if there are no pictures?), and an alarm clock set for an hour when most people are still deep in dreamland. Yep, I’m talking about pre-dawn hikes—think 2:30 or 3:00 AM early.

I know what you’re thinking: “Wait…what?! That’s not fun; that’s madness!” But hear me out. There’s something absolutely magical about stepping onto a trail when the world is still wrapped in quiet darkness. It’s like entering a secret realm that only exists for those willing to wake up and explore it.

In those early hours, everything feels different. The air is crisp and cool, the world is still, and it’s just you and your footsteps crunching along the path. It’s peaceful in a way that’s hard to describe—a kind of solitude that feels grounding instead of lonely.

And then comes the best part: the gradual awakening of the world around you. At first, you might only see vague shapes in the distance cloaked in soft fog, but soon the sounds begin—a rustle of leaves here, a bird chirping there. It’s subtle at first but builds into something extraordinary.

By the time the sun starts to rise, you’re fully immersed in nature’s morning symphony. The sky transforms from deep, dark blues to fiery oranges and pinks, and the world comes alive with sound—birds singing their hearts out, frogs croaking from hidden ponds, maybe even a distant cow or two joining in. It’s like watching a masterpiece being painted right before your eyes, one brushstroke at a time.

For me, these hikes are more than just exercise—they’re moments of awe and connection. They remind me to be present and grateful for the simple beauty of life unfolding around me. Sure, my legs might burn from climbing uphill or navigating rocky trails, but it never feels like a chore. It feels like nourishment—not just for my body but for my mind and spirit too.

If you’ve ever felt like exercise is something you “have” to do rather than something you want to do, I’d encourage you to give an early morning hike a try. You don’t have to dive straight into a 3 AM wake-up call (unless you’re feeling adventurous!). Even catching a sunrise on your local trail can shift your perspective and make movement feel less like work and more like wonder.

So, what about you? What’s your favorite way to make exercise fun? I’d love to hear your thoughts—drop them in the comments below! Who knows? Your idea might inspire someone else to find joy in movement too.

On weekends, my boyfriend and I always go hiking early. Not quite that early lol but we usually hit the mountain by four 430. It is cool to watch the Earth waking up around you

Thanks again for the comment. I discovered early hiking by doing astrophotography and then hiking back in the early hours. It’s amazing going from almost total silence to everything being alive.
