The5For April 22nd, 2025 – Food Fights, Comfy Seats, and Dirty Drinks

Posted: Wednesday, April 23, 2025

Hey everyone, and welcome back to The5For! It’s Wednesday morning, April 23rd, 2025. I’m diving into some fascinating headlines that were buzzing around the convenience store and foodservice worlds on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025. It looks like the industry is really leaning into food. They are discovering innovative ways to attract us. The industry is even reconsidering something as fundamental as where we sit down. Plus, a bubbly and customizable beverage trend is making waves!

Let’s get right into the 5 things (plus a bonus!) that really caught my eye yesterday:

1. More Food = More Customers

It’s a pretty straightforward idea. The convenience store industry is really embracing it. Emphasizing foodservice directly translates to higher foot traffic. According to CSP Daily News, c-stores that are upgrading their food options – think fresh-made sandwiches, better coffee, or even hot meals – are seeing more and more customers walk through their doors. From an industry insider’s perspective, this isn’t just about selling another sandwich. It’s about fundamentally shifting how people view the c-store. This shift is from a quick pit stop for gas and a snack to a genuine food destination. And of course, more people in the store means more opportunities to sell everything else you’ve got.

2. C-Stores Throwing Down the Quality Gauntlet with QSRs

Building right off that first point, C-Store Dive highlights how improved food quality is becoming a major weapon for c-stores in their ongoing competition with Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs). Apparently, offering genuinely tasty and high-quality food can actually tempt consumers away from their usual fast-food haunts. And let’s not forget the power of loyalty programs, rewarding those repeat visits. Think about your own habits: if your neighborhood convenience store started offering a fantastic made-to-order breakfast burrito that could go toe-to-toe with that drive-thru down the street, and you could earn points while you’re at it, where would you be more likely to stop? It’s all about leveraging that convenience factor while delivering on both quality and value.

3. When East Meets West (Right There in the Aisles!)

I stumbled upon a really interesting piece in The New York Times T Magazine (which C-Store Dive also flagged) exploring the fascinating cultural exchange between Japan and America, particularly as it shows up in consumer goods and retail concepts. While the NYT T Magazine article likely covers a broader range of trends, like Japanese whisky, the connection to convenience stores is undeniable. Japan’s konbinis (convenience stores) are famous for their high-quality fresh food, unique snack selections, and incredibly attentive service. While the US market has its own distinct characteristics, we’re definitely seeing inspiration flowing in both directions. Could the elevated standards and unique product mixes we see in Japanese convenience stores be a preview of what we’ll see more of here in the States? It’s a cool reminder of how global ideas can shape our everyday shopping experiences.

4. Pull Up a Chair! Is the “Third Place” Making a C-Store Comeback?

Remember when coffee shops were considered the ultimate “third place” – that comfortable spot outside of home and work where you could just hang out? Well, Yahoo Lifestyle reports that Starbucks is consciously adding more comfortable seating, seemingly trying to recapture that welcoming vibe. This trend isn’t just limited to coffee shops. As convenience stores improve their food offerings (see points 1 & 2!), some are also adding or upgrading their seating areas. This encourages customers to stick around a little longer, enjoy their meal, maybe even hop on the Wi-Fi. It’s a shift towards creating more of an experience rather than just a quick transaction, and it’s another way for c-stores to compete with QSRs and cafes for customer dwell time. Could your local c-store become your new favorite hangout?

5. Getting Fizzy with “Dirty Sodas”

What exactly is a “dirty soda”? Think fountain soda mixed with cream, flavored syrups, and sometimes fruit purees – a trend popularized in Utah and spreading via social media. CSP Daily News makes the case for why c-stores are perfectly positioned to jump on this bandwagon. With extensive fountain setups already in place, adding a few extra ingredients offers a customizable, high-margin, and frankly, fun beverage option. It taps into customization trends and offers something unique that customers might specifically seek out. Keep an eye out – you might see dirty soda options popping up near you!

Bonus Round! C-Store Giants on the World Stage

Just a quick extra note: CSP Daily News also reported that several major convenience store players – namely 7-Eleven (owned by Seven & i Holdings), Alimentation Couche-Tard (owner of Circle K), and FEMSA (owner of OXXO) – have landed spots on the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) Top 50 Global Retailers list. It’s a powerful reminder that the convenience industry includes some massive, influential companies shaping retail worldwide.

The Bottom Line

The Bottom Line

So there you have it – a Tuesday that was heavily focused on the exciting evolution of convenience foodservice, the growing importance of the overall customer experience (right down to having a comfy place to sit!), and the fun, fizzy trends that are bubbling up. It’s clear that the c-store world is anything but static – it’s dynamic, innovative, and constantly looking for new ways to connect with us.
